Best Moments of the Week 4/24-4/30

- Morning walks when it’s cool, breezy and sunny.
- Hanging out with fellow homesteader friends.
- A, for the most part, unplanned day that allows for ogling Asian markets and laying about unusefully (for a change).
- A fantastic drive to get my pig, windows down, music blaring, watching the rye grass blow in the wind. The butchershop [...]

- Pinhole photography including 6 month long exposure shots. Every day the Sun leaves one line after another. The tracks of the moving Sun are visible and increase progressively from December to June. The missing traces are due to the Sun being obscured on overcast days.

What I've Been Up To - In The Kitchen

From left to right:

I strained some more dairy kefir. This mostly is an exercise in keeping my grains alive, since I’ve not been able to find a reliable way to incorporate kefir into my diet in a way that doesn’t taste horrible (too much sour wheng for me).

Husband opened up a can of artichoke hearts [...]

Half a Pig

For anyone interested, a half a pig turns out to be 141 pounds of meat and looks like this:

4 x 5# bags of pork fat (mm lard!)
5 x 2# bags of smoked pork belly
1 x ham hocks
1 x 2.25# bag of St. Louis style ribs
7 x 1# bags of center cut pork chops (2 each [...]

What I've Been Doing - In The Kitchen

I realized last weekend that I’d be getting potentially 175 pounds of pork the following Saturday (turned out to only be 141 pounds) and that it would behoove me to make some room in my freezer for said pork.

I sifted through, took inventory, made a list of things that I should eat this coming week [...]

Best Moments of the Week 4/17-4/23

- Dinner of lamb ribs, beef ribs, kale sauteed in molasses bacon fat, roasted fennel with cheddar cheese and a bottle of Cab.
- Fields and fields of strawberries.
- 15 pounds of dehydrated strawberries.
- A sense of community at Farm Market Day Potluck.
- Collecting rocking chairs for the new house’s front porch.
- Good homemade beer (and the [...]

What Not To Do...

So our builder goes out to the property today to try to get our tractor unstuck (Husband high-centered it on Saturday in the quicksand). He hooks up his tow strap to it, and tries to drag it out, gets about eight feet with it, but then his front tires sink in.

Oy.

He was supposed to [...]

Lesson 3 and 4: Soaked Whole Grain Baked Goods

In this lesson we learned how to make soaked whole grain muffins and pancakes as well as biscuits and pasta and I have to say, to be honest, that I’ve not actually made them. I don’t often make muffins or pancakes or most other baked goods often, so [...]

Strawberries!

I had planned to go pick strawberries before I knew that it was likely to rain all day.

I was set and determined to go though, unless it was pouring down rain, I would be out there and I packed rain pants, rain coat, giant mud boots and a hat to thwart it all. And of [...]
