It’s been a challenging couple of months. Since joining the local volunteer fire department late last year, I’ve been spending the last 6 Saturdays in class for an Emergency Medical Responder class that has kept me in a constant state of feeling like my head might explode. Due to various circumstances, our final test in class [...] I suppose this is akin to my Best Moments of the Week lists, but a blogger at Bless Her Heart posted about here 30 days of a grateful heart and it sounded like a good idea. I’ve been posting one thing a day over on Facebook, but I figured I’d collect them here for posterity [...] I was messing around with my new copies of Photoshop and Photomatix and went out to shoot some pictures of the cloudy sky one day to test out the HDR. It’s not amazing, but it’s still pretty fun. Certainly makes my boring pasture a little more double plus than it actually [...] Summer is in full swing and we’ve been constantly busy here. Garden We had to just stop watering the cucumbers, they were producing so much and we couldn’t keep up (they were starting to look ratty anyways, so it was time). [...] Don’t mind the miserable faces, it was almost 100 degrees and they were annoyed that I was interrupting them from a shade nap We’ve had Grace for over two months now and she’s working out wonderfully. She comes into the milk barn when called, stands (fairly) still when milked, and has not had mastitis since that first [...] I picked up the meat from Spot from the processor on Monday. 464 pounds of packaged beef. She was 1150 pounds live weight, so a 40% yield. Not so great, but I knew she was skinny. I custom chose my cut sheet and even though I’ve created cut sheets for beef and pork several times now, [...] I got the hide back from Spot when I took her in to the processor and I’m glad I did. I was thinking it might be too much trouble, but it is looking beautiful already and I haven’t even shipped it off to the tannery. It came back very jello-y, like a big pile of blubber, [...] I’ve been absent from the blog as of late, but we’ve been busy and I’ve been trying to catch up. It’s been a very busy and draining two weeks and I really haven’t been able to make updates like I wanted quite yet. We took Spot in to be butchered last Thursday and I’ve spent the [...] It’s taken four months but I’m hoping we’re on the upswing. Henrietta, after the round of meds for her infection, is doing well. She runs around kicking, playing, exploring, hanging out with the neighbor cows and licking just about everything. Her coat is darkening at her knees and along her back and I get the feeling [...] |
