I got the hide back from Spot when I took her in to the processor and I’m glad I did. I was thinking it might be too much trouble, but it is looking beautiful already and I haven’t even shipped it off to the tannery. It came back very jello-y, like a big pile of blubber, [...] I’ve been absent from the blog as of late, but we’ve been busy and I’ve been trying to catch up. It’s been a very busy and draining two weeks and I really haven’t been able to make updates like I wanted quite yet. We took Spot in to be butchered last Thursday and I’ve spent the [...] It’s taken four months but I’m hoping we’re on the upswing. Henrietta, after the round of meds for her infection, is doing well. She runs around kicking, playing, exploring, hanging out with the neighbor cows and licking just about everything. Her coat is darkening at her knees and along her back and I get the feeling [...] It’s been a busy couple of weeks. My sister came in for a visit and I spent the latter part of the week before last trying to get everything prepared for taking a week of vacation while she’s here. I pre-made several dinner options (she’s vegetarian) and had them frozen and ready (spinach chickpea masala, pumpkin [...] - A shell-less egg from one of the new chickens. - The sun streaming through the bedroom window in the morning. It’s been a rough week. We’ve been having cow woes for almost two months now. It started out when Spot calved, she had a retained placenta. There are a handful of things that could have caused it, and we never did figure out which one it was. Then we started milking and she wouldn’t let down. [...] The garden is bouncing back quite nicely from the cold snap. We lost almost nothing, much to my surprise. In fact, the brassicas came out of it much better than they had been, surprisingly. Yesterday my mom and I weeded 95% of it (ouch) with only the onions left out for the moment. The carrots are [...] - Vitamin needs of cattle. - Blank dissolvable labels – Great for marking stuff going into the fridge or freezer or labeling jars in the pantry. - Sourdough bagel recipe – one of the ladies on the forum adds 2-4 T of vital wheat gluten to help with the chewy texture. - The Producers Coop in [...] Somehow, I’ve made it through the last couple of weeks, but it’s kind of been a blur. The cow is still unwell, I’m having the vet do cultures and blood tests to figure out what’s wrong. After talking with my dairy friends, we’ve moved the donkeys into the smaller paddock for the time being so that [...] Milking is going, though not as well as I’d like. We discovered that Spot has mastitis again in that same quarter she had it before. We had given her a double dose of the last medicine, this time we stepped up our game to the Really-Good-Stuff to hopefully knock it out. I’m worried about it [...] |
