Warning, these are potentially gorey photos, if you’re squeamish about birth, I’d just skip right past. This morning, I had planned to go into town with Hubs, we were going to be going to lunch and then meeting up with some friends this evening. I had all my stuff packed in the car for the day, [...] Who was born shortly after dawn this [...] Sunday morning Spot was still skittish and upset and wasn’t too interested in making friends quite yet. I was able to get a hand on her, but she kept walking away when I got close. The longhorn steer next door found a way through his fence (again) and spent Saturday night and Sunday in our yard [...] There is no place on earth that I’d rather be than right here in this moment. All my husband’s clatter was sweet and cute this morning, though I know he was frustrated and trying to be quiet; I needed to get up anyways. He came in to say goodbye and kiss me like every morning before [...] Sand Creek Farm had a seminar this past weekend on raising milk cows that my mother, my Hubs and I attended. It was certainly like drinking from a firehose, though the class was only a few hours long. Some highlights: - Jerseys and Guernseys have the highest levels of A2 milk. A2 (versus A1) is a [...] From my weekend at Sand Creek Farm. It’s always a pleasure to see my friends there… Who can resist such pretty brown eyes? The sun rising over the fields The hay, frozen and full [...] This weekend I attended a class on home butchering at Sand Creek Farm. It was amazing and much less intimidating or gross than I ever imagined. We went from live animal to cut up pieces over two days. Ben and Alysha had some of their Amish friends down from Ohio, the one gentleman is a butcher [...] A couple of weeks ago we stumbled upon a small local farmer’s market in the parking lot of a gas station up the road. There was a guy selling eggs and vegetables and we chatted him up some. He is a local breeder of about 14 different kinds of chickens, assorted ducks, turkeys, guineas, and all [...] Last week, Miguel built us a chicken run for the girls. They have been cooped up in their new coop for almost a month and their misery was showing – one egg every few days. I felt so bad for them, the new coop has a hardware cloth bottom on it for better predator protection, but [...] Last week Hubs cleared a path around the 3/4 mile perimeter of our property with the tractor. The property gets pretty wild pretty quickly, so keeping up with it is going to be a constant endeavor.
