I know there’s all sorts of neato apps like vegweb.com and the like, but I really like drawing my garden plans by hand. Here’s what I’ve come up with for the spring/summer planting. It’s certainly got a lot [...] Still no calf. Every day we go out in the morning hoping to see two instead of one, but we’ve woken up every day to nothing new. We’re supposed to get a cold snap early next week, I’m guessing Sunday or Monday. She’s coming to understand though that I’m the yummy food dispenser, and to come [...] Last week while I was on vacation we happened upon a pair of donkeys on Craigslist. We went to visit and right there worked to get them delivered that day. They are sweet, curious and friendly. They love pets and snuggles, nibbling on your zippers and sleeves (sometimes missing and nipping you while they’re at it [...] Tomorrow we go to pick up Spot the Cow. I’ve been reading books on keeping a home milk cow all week, but it’s done nothing to make me feel more prepared for her arrival. Just the opposite, I end up having dreams every night about the cow, usually with something horrible going wrong. One dream I was [...] Miguel finished up the internal cross fencing this week. It’s about 800 feet of fencing, about 160 of that which is part of our existing garden fencing. He put in three access gates, two around the perimeter and one as a walk gate from the house (pictured below). The fence in red is complete this past week [...] - Busy weeks where you lose track of what day it is! It’s been distracting here lately – I’ve been quiet. We’ve been working on the homestead quite heavily between the garden, the pasture, and my eye surgery it’s been hard to keep up with blogging about it. I’ve been rowing against the tide on many things and my todo list just keeps getting longer every day. We [...] - Finding new homes for coats that aren’t being used any longer. - A new local spice monger – I’ve missed living near a Penzey’s. It started out before we moved here. We talked about how we were going to do the homestead garden, what was it going to look like, how would it be laid out. Once we got here, we picked a place, talked about fencing and how to do the raised beds and then Miguel got to work [...] |
