Tomorrow we go to pick up Spot the Cow. I’ve been reading books on keeping a home milk cow all week, but it’s done nothing to make me feel more prepared for her arrival. Just the opposite, I end up having dreams every night about the cow, usually with something horrible going wrong. One dream I was [...] This weekend I attended a class on home butchering at Sand Creek Farm. It was amazing and much less intimidating or gross than I ever imagined. We went from live animal to cut up pieces over two days. Ben and Alysha had some of their Amish friends down from Ohio, the one gentleman is a butcher [...] It started out before we moved here. We talked about how we were going to do the homestead garden, what was it going to look like, how would it be laid out. Once we got here, we picked a place, talked about fencing and how to do the raised beds and then Miguel got to work [...] Last week Hubs cleared a path around the 3/4 mile perimeter of our property with the tractor. The property gets pretty wild pretty quickly, so keeping up with it is going to be a constant endeavor. Last night, we took a walk to talk about where we wanted to put potential cows, pigs, further cultivation and [...] One of the first projects I had Miguel work on was the one that I started and was having trouble with. Turns out, I guess I was doing it right, or mostly right. I followed the directions that I found at the Life, In a Nutshell blog. I used: 4 landscaping timbers Since it’s been raining, it’s got me thinking about how much water we use here at the new house. I was worried that our septic drain field would get overwhelmed but it didn’t seem to be puddling around the drain field while it was raining too badly.
