It’s been a challenging couple of months. Since joining the local volunteer fire department late last year, I’ve been spending the last 6 Saturdays in class for an Emergency Medical Responder class that has kept me in a constant state of feeling like my head might explode. Due to various circumstances, our final test in class [...] We’ve had some rather moist mornings lately. The other morning I was up and milking early in the fog, and on my way to class I pulled over and snapped this shot with my iPhone of a neighbor’s field in the [...] A few weeks ago we finally had a couple of storm systems move through. Most of them didn’t produce much rain, less than a quarter inch in most cases and very hit or miss. We watched the radar as one big storm split in two and went right around us – so disheartening when we are [...] My audio recording of the May 12 thunderstorm Recorded off of my back porch as it blew in, it started with significant wind through the trees which broke a branch of a mesquite tree in the backyard (1:20). The rain started (2:55) and the storm intensified. This is notable because though it was only an inch of [...] Tuesday night here at the farm we were sitting around and noticed an eerie orange glow from outside. We went out to find this monster taking over the sky. The skies here in Texas are HUGE. Magnanimous. And this beast was taking over half of it and the storm was a good 30 miles away. It [...] Milking is going, though not as well as I’d like. We discovered that Spot has mastitis again in that same quarter she had it before. We had given her a double dose of the last medicine, this time we stepped up our game to the Really-Good-Stuff to hopefully knock it out. I’m worried about it [...] It’s been COLD. Colder than normal for these parts. It’s been below freezing for almost two full days now (low of 22 last night, high of 29 yesterday, low of 19 the night before). That huge cold front ripped through here Monday morning with winds so fierce we thought the roof was going to come off. As [...] Miguel finished up the internal cross fencing this week. It’s about 800 feet of fencing, about 160 of that which is part of our existing garden fencing. He put in three access gates, two around the perimeter and one as a walk gate from the house (pictured below). The fence in red is complete this past week [...] - Busy weeks where you lose track of what day it is! This last week has been getting back into the groove. I went back to work after a two week vacation to move and it felt a little strange. Since we had moved in here, I hadn’t been working so I had to shift my thinking out of the put-stuff-away, do-do-go-go mode into the sitting-behind-a-desk-and-working-all-day mode. So [...] |
